Did you know that according to a study done by The Chronicle of Philanthropy in 2012, Austin is ranked 32nd out of the 50 largest cities in the nation in per capita charitable giving? This is a big improvement over our ranking at the beginning of the 21st century when we ranked 48, but there is still a lot of room for growth!

Austin is a vibrant city with a personality all its own. Central Texans are passionate, driven, and generous volunteers of their time and talent. But that’s not enough. The biggest problem facing Austin Nonprofits is there is not enough money.

Our community is well known for cherishing its environment and local businesses, its time to nurture our home-grown nonprofits in the same way!

We depend on our nonprofits to meet so many of the Austin's most basic needs; but the shortage of funds for these organizations is creating large gaps in services.

This is where I Live Here, I Give Here steps in. Our main purpose is to connect people like YOU with the issues you care about and the Nonprofits that support them.

I Live Here, I Give Here is proud of the work we have accomplished since our launch in 2007. We connect the people of Austin with the causes they care about.

We partner with nonprofit groups so they can be more accessible to you. We spotlight specific needs in Austin every month to let you know how you can help.

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to let you know that Tom Spencer will assume the role of Executive Director of I Live Here, I Give Here beginning September 3!

Having brought I Live Here, I Give Here from an idea with skeptics to a movement with significant, proven impact, I'm ready to step back from the day-to-day operation of the organization. And I can't think of anyone better than Tom to take the foundation we have built to the next level and beyond.

As I'm sure you know, Tom is highly respected in our community. He is coming to I Live Here, I Give Here from Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) where his achievements as CEO include bringing the agency to fiscal health and creating a nationally recognized interfaith dialogue program, The Red Bench. Before he joined iACT, Tom was the Executive Producer and host of multiple public affairs and special interest programs at KLRU-TV, PBS for more than 25 years. Tom also knows I Live Here, I Give Here well, as he has served on our Board of Directors for the last 18 months.

Come September, I will be joining I Live Here, I Give Here's Board of Directors. I look forward with eager anticipation to watching my "baby" grow and blossom under Tom's leadership.  I hope you will join me in supporting Tom as he works to further expand the impact of I Live Here, I Give Here.

Again, I wanted you to be among the first to know about this exciting news.  Don't hesitate to let us know if you have questions or thoughts.

Please join us at The BIG Give on September 27, where we'll celebrate this exciting news together!

With much gratitude for what we've achieved together and for what we will accomplish moving forward,

Ernest Hemingway advised that one should, “Never write about a place until you're away from it, because that gives you perspective.”

It has almost been a year since I moved to Austin from Lawrence, Kansas.  Last August, I moved here with a good friend of mine, a new job and way too many winter clothes (since it doesn’t seem to get below 101 degrees in Texas).  I grew up in Lawrence, and ultimately, graduated from the University of Kansas, also nestled in the small town of Lawrence.  I guess you could say, ok, you could definitely say, I was a “townie.”
